Marketing Monday: Be an Honest Representative

During this past week, I spent some time going back over my marketing training from North Node Solutions. It covers copywriting for Facebook and other social media platforms. In it, I was reminded of the importance of marketing with integrity, about being an honest representative of any product, service, or company that I am marketing.

Making Money without Integrity Will Steal Your Peace of Mind

Marketing is powerful. It can persuade people to do things that can destroy their lives, such as smoking cigarettes or drinking sodas, or it can persuade people to do things that will save their lives and preserve their health. It's important to understand that power and to respect it.

As Chris, the head of North Node Solutions, pointed out, marketing without integrity is a fast way to destroy your own peace of mind. You'll end up wasting time worrying about when people will find out that you're a fraud or that you've been selling them out and whether they are going to come after you for what you've done. You may make a million or more with the sales you make, but you won't rest easy in the same bed that made that money.

5 Reasons Never to Compromise Your Integrity in Marketing

Of course, if your peace of mind isn't enough, here are 5 more reasons that you should never compromise your integrity in the course of marketing. Honesty truly is the best policy and full disclosure is due to every prospect.

1. Lies Make One Sale. Trust Makes Many Sales.

If you want repeat business, you need customers to trust you. You need them to trust that you're going to do what you say you will and deliver what you promise. Deceiving them about what you can offer or what that's going to do for them may work once, but it's not going to keep working. Once people figure out that you deceived them, they aren't going to buy from you again.

2. Once Lost, Trust Is Difficult - and EXPENSIVE - to Regain

Once you've lost a customer's trust, it's not just difficult, it is time-consuming and expensive to regain. You not only have to make up for the damages you did with the deception you engaged in, assuming you can, but you have to then spend a lot of money and work very hard to convince the burned customer that you've changed your ways and are now someone they can trust.

3. Misrepresenting What You Do, Who You Are, or How You Do What You Do Is a Fast Ticket to a Lawsuit or Possible Jail Time

Once you start engaging in deceptive marketing practices, you run afoul of the Federal Trade Commission. Customers who bought into your scam or con are eligible to sue you and the FTC can shut down your operation. Don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it.

4. Many People Can Smell Insincerity & Deception A Mile Away

Here's something most people don't consider: Insincerity and sketchy behavior are things that many people are good at detecting. You will end up chasing off potential buyers that you would enjoy having as customers if you aren't being honest with them and all that you'll have left are other scammers interested in getting what they can out of you.

5. A Lack of Integrity Will Come Back to Haunt You

People don't forget the names of people who hurt them, and they aren't likely to forget if you're the guilty party. They will tell friends, family, and anyone who will listen all about what you've done. Even if you change your ways and begin to make amends, you will still be fighting the old reputation for the rest of your life.

Marketing with Integrity and Project FED

As I mentioned in yesterday's blog post on working for what matters, love is at the core of all that we do here at Project FED. That includes our marketing. The methods I teach are all centered on bringing that love into every bit of marketing you do, and integrity is a vital part of that.

In order to be loved for who you are, where you are, exactly as you are - you must first have the courage to be honest about who you are, where you are, exactly as you are. You can't afford to be anything less than honest if you want to earn the love of the people you seek to serve with the marketing you are doing.
