During yesterday’s post, I spoke about my struggles with communication and connection. I also shared with you that my plan for today was to talk about ways to share the good news and the importance of doing so as a marketer.
My Awareness of the Problem
Thursday afternoon, an old friend of mine from years back,
Jana, contacted me to ask me for some help with something a friend of hers was
working on building. Since it was about how to start a blog, she knew I had the
expertise needed to help him.
I promised to make her friend a tutorial on how to set up a
brand new blogger account and that I would post that on my YouTube channel, so
be watching for that.
As we talked, she told me something important: She rarely
sees my posts. I realized that is probably true for most of the 1500 people who
follow me on Facebook. It is highly likely that they rarely see what I post.
And that means that one of the main reasons I am not getting the responses I
would like from the posts I am making is simple: very few people are seeing
them.
Fun Facts about Social Media
True fact: Social media algorithms present your post to – on
average – just 3% of the people you are connected to online. That means if you
have 1500 followers, just 45 of them are seeing what you have to say and that
is only the 45 most active and engaged followers.
The less often you engage with someone on your social media
friends list, the less often you see their posts. This is because the social
media algorithms assume you aren’t that interested in what they have to say.
They will also hide your posts from people if you seem to cause
people to smash the negative emojis like anger or frowns a whole lot. They don’t
want people agitated. They want them having a good time.

Becoming More Proactive
Jana reaching out to me made me aware of how easily I let
good friends slip through the cracks because I am not more proactive about
reaching out to them. There’s nothing wrong with my ability to reach out
through Messenger or pick up a phone and call them. I simply don’t do it.
This is a personal failing of mine, but it is also something
that is hurting my efforts to market Project FED and it is keeping people from
knowing about the good news that I have to offer them about an opportunity to
make money by serving the needs of others without paying anything up front to
get started.
It made me mindful of the fact that many of my marketing
problems all come down to this: I do not make enough effort to reach out to
those I’ve already served in the past to let them know about what I have to
offer them today.
In a World Full of Bad News, We Owe People Some Good News
When we have good news to share and a genuinely good opportunity
to help them improve their lives, which is what we should have if we’re
promoting or marketing something, we owe it to them to let them know. There’s
so much bad news surrounding them and so many reasons for them to give up or
lose hope that we may just be sharing exactly what they needed to hear that
day.
We never know where we are going to meet people or what is
going on in their lives. We never know how badly they may need what we have to
offer until we start offering it.
Taking Steps to Change Things
I’m only one person and I can only reach out to so many
people in a day, but if I make a plan and set up a system, I can reach out to
20 new people each day and begin the work of getting back in touch with them. I
can create a simple outreach text that I use to start the conversation and let
them flow from there.
That plan may mean it takes me 75 days to reach out to all
of my Facebook followers, but if every 75 days I am reaching out to them, that
reignites the relationships and gives new room for our friendships to grow. It
also means that 1500 people will have heard about Project FED and know about
its existence by the end of that time.
And, best of all, I will have helped 1500 of my friends have
the opportunity to benefit from the work that I am doing. 1500 of my friends
will know that, if they want it, there’s an opportunity for them to make money
online promoting products that support orphans in Nigeria and it is free for
them to get started. All they need to do is sign up and start sharing.
A Social Media Marketing Action Plan
Until you put together a plan and become proactive about
your efforts, nothing is going to change. You have to be active in reaching out
to people and letting them know what you know. You can’t assume they are seeing
your posts because they probably aren’t.
1. Make It Manageable
For me, reaching out to 20 people in a single day is doable.
I don’t have children in my home and I don’t work outside the home. For you, it
may not be so manageable. Choose a number that you can be sure you will be able
to do each day.
2. Make It Personal
Take a little time to look through the news feed of each
person you plan on reaching out to. Make
a note of any posts that are either related to what you want to discuss or that
strike you in a particular way. Use that as your excuse to reach out.
3. Make a Comment on That Post
This is especially important as it helps boost their post to
a wider audience and it lets the social media algorithm know that you want to
see more of their posts moving forward.
4. Make a Connection
Pull up their DM or your messenger feature. Start off by
saying something like, “I saw your post about <<post topic>>. It really
hit me because <<reason it caught your attention>>. It’s been a
while since we last talked, and I’d love to reconnect if you’re open to that.
5. Make It About Them
The biggest mistake you can make in re-establishing a
connection with someone is to make it all about you and what you want. Make it
about them and how you can help them.
Share Your Strategy
Do you have a social media marketing plan that you use to
ensure you are ready at all times to share the good news about what you have to
