Time Management Tuesday: Creating a Portable Writing Kit

The key to finding time to write when your schedule is busy and you have many duties to complete is preparation and organization. Prepare ahead of time all the supplies you need and create a system of organization that will help you make the most of small windows of time and opportunity that come available.

What Is a Portable Writing Kit?

At its simplest, it contains four things: A tote bag to hold all of the writing materials you need, a journal, your writing outline, and a zip lock baggie of pens. This is the minimum you need to take advantage of the time you have available to you to write. I don’t recommend fussing with a laptop as it takes time to boot up and in that time you could have already been writing.

10 Tips to Getting the Most of Your Portable Writing Kit

1. Pack it up the night before and check it for all the needed supplies.

2. Keep the portable writing kit with you everywhere you go.

3. Tuck your outline into the journal right after your last entry so you can quickly pull up a fresh page.

4. When you have 10 minutes to write, pull out your journal and pick up where you left off on the outline.

5. Put everything back in the bag when you’re done writing.

6. Reserve the front two pages of your journal for notes about what is contained inside, similar to a table of contents.

7. Number your journal pages as you write them.

8. Each evening go through your entry for that day and give your entry a title that is meaningful along with 2-3 bullet points about what the entry covers.

9. Add those notes to the front page along with the page numbers in the journal.

10. Read your journal entry into word or Google docs and let it transcribe these entries for you.

Never Underestimate the Impact of Small Blocks of Writing Time

The slowest writer writing by hand can write 10 words in a minute. Ten words times 10 minutes is 100 words. 100 words over 600 days – less than 2 years – is 60,000 words, which is the length of the average novel. You have all the time you need to get your writing done. It’s how you use your time that makes the difference.
