Time Management Tuesday: Getting Creative With Time

During yesterday’s Marketing Monday blog post, I talked about getting creative with your marketing. Today, I’m going to show you how to apply that same strategy to your time management so you can reclaim some of that precious time you’ve got to spend while getting more done with less effort.

5 Steps to Creative Time Management

Here are 5 steps you can take to apply your creativity to the challenge of finding the time you need to do the things in life that matter most to you while getting done the mundane, must-do things that can’t be avoided (like bathing or brushing your teeth).

1.  Look for ways to Combine Activities

You may not always be able to do this, but there are plenty of ways you can combine activities. You need to spend time with your family, for instance, and you need to eat. Having dinner around the dining table is one way to combine your need for healthy, nutritious meals to fuel your brain while also spending time with your family.

Daily prayer is important for keeping the creative connections flowing and so is exercise. Combine the two by walking while praying a rosary or just having a talk with God. You should be reading new things every day and you also need to commute to work? No problem. Bring your headphones and listen to a chapter a day of a book that’s going to help you improve your skills or challenge your thinking.

2.  Recycle Past Work

Sometimes we think we need to create everything from scratch, fresh and brand new each time. This is actually a waste of time. Instead, taking a look at past work you’ve done that can be recycled into new work is the most efficient method of getting more done than you thought was possible in less time.

3.  Turn Work Into a Party

Work is always easier when it’s done with a group who are having fun. No matter what the task – whether it’s household chores or doing taxes – turn it into a party. Put on some music and let everyone work on it together if it can be done as a group project or side-by-side if it’s something that needs to be done individually (such as taxes). You can talk and laugh and eat and drink while the work is getting done.

4. Swap Tasks You Don’t Like for Tasks You Do

Let’s say you have a friend who loves numbers and is great at accounting, while you hate those things. You’re good at writing and drawing. They hate putting together marketing materials for their business, you love it. Swap with them. 

Ask them to do your books in exchange for you doing the things you love doing. By trading tasks you aren’t good at and don’t like doing with people who need skills you are good at and love doing, you’re going to save the both of you time and the hard tasks will get done quicker and with greater quality.

5.  Put It On Autopilot
