Time Management Tuesday: Be Clear About Your Priorities

“Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” – Psalm 90:12

Last week, I introduced Time Management Tuesday, a time where I talk about how to make sure you are getting the most out of the time you are going to spend in this life. Today, I’m going to dive into the very first and most important step to take on this journey of getting control over the way you use your time.

Get Clear About What Matters…and What Doesn’t

“Begin with the End in Mind” – Stephen Covey

I was 26 years old when I heard a voice tell me, as clearly as if someone had been standing beside me, “5 years. Make them count.” I knew in my heart I was being told that I had five years to get my life in order.

I went home that day and took the list of 100 things that I’d wanted to do before I died and I tore it up and threw it away. Suddenly, none of those things mattered to me. I sat down on the bed and wrote a list of five things that actually mattered.

I found out that day what my five biggest priorities in life were:

1.       God and my relationship with Him.

2.       My husband and son and their relationship with one another.

3.       Ensuring the financial stability of my family now and in the future.

4.       Honoring the investment people have paid into me.

5.       Making certain that the world is a better place for my having been here.

This is where I recommend you begin: If you only had five years to live, what would be the five things you would want to accomplish before that time was over?

Examining Where You Currently Spend Your Time

Once you know what your priorities are, it’s time to evaluate where you currently spend your time to see whether the things you say matter most to you are where you actually spend the majority of your time. It’s easy to fool ourselves into believing something matters to us but when we examine our behavior, that’s when we find the truth.

This is a no judgement zone. It’s okay if the time you are spending right now isn’t lining up with your priorities. We’ll be going over strategies that will help you to free up more time to devote to achieving the things that matter most to you in the weeks to come.

What you’re going to do for the next week is keep a time journal. You will write down every activity you do as well as when you start doing it and when you end doing it. At the end of the week, you’ll be able to see exactly where your time is going and how much of that time is contributing to the things you want to accomplish.

Next Week: Understanding Opportunity Costs

Next week, we’re going to look at where you are spending your time and we’ll start evaluating the cost of the opportunities where you currently spend most of your time. Yes, this will include examining the job you currently hold and what the true opportunity cost is for you to get the paycheck you’re currently receiving. Then, we’ll discuss strategies for reducing that opportunity cost so you can make the most out of every minute you spend.
